College reverses professor's policy of inflating women's grades

Dr. Liping Liu is a University of Akron Professor. He emailed his female students on Monday with what he thought was good news for them and society.

He was inflating their grade "one level or two". Dr. Liu was hoping to encourage more women to major in information sciences. He thought he was helping society by preventing women from flunking his class.

The Professor could have done it without telling anyone. Instead, the above email was posted on the internet.

His employer issued a statement, Wednesday, by Rex Ramsier, Executive Vice President, Chief Administration Officer and Provost.  Dr. Ramsier is pictured at the top of this post.

It said:

“The University has verified that there were no adjustments to grades based upon the gender of individuals in the class. While the professor’s stated intention of encouraging female students to go into the information sciences field may be laudable, his approach as described in his email was clearly unacceptable.  The University of Akron follows both the law and its policies and does not discriminate on the basis of sex. The professor in question has been advised accordingly, and he has reaffirmed his commitment to adhering to these strict standards.”

Dr Liping Liu is a Professor of information Systems Analysis and Design. He still works for the University of Akron. Neither the professor, the university, or his female students have disclosed their grades.
