Google's Eric Schmidt is burrowing into Pentagon's artificial intelligence unit called "Project Maven"

Google's Eric Schmidt is Chairman of the Defense Innovation Board, Department of Defense (DOD). Schmidt is former CEO of Google. Now he works for Google as a  Technical Consultant.

The picture above was taken by the U.S. Air Force. It shows the operational unit of the Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Division at the Combined Air Operations Center at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar.

At stake is billions of dollars in defense contracts.

Heading the project is Col. Drew Cukor of the Marines.

The Colonel is in charge of the Algorithmic Warfare Cross-Function Team in the Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Operations Directorate-Warfighter Support in the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence.

With Project Maven software, the Pentagon hopes to improve drone strikes by accurately identifying and separating military from civilian targets.

China already has this technology. They use it on their citizens for round-the-clock surveillance.

Google is competing with Amazon, Microsoft, and others for a multiyear, multi-billion-dollar contract to provide cloud services to the Defense Department.

“We are in an AI arms race,” Col. Cukor said. "Eric Schmidt is calling Google an AI company now, not a data company.”

AI means "artificial intelligence."

Google is a subcontractor on Project Maven.  ECS Federal is the prime contractor.
