Money for the wall? $15 billion collected in asset seizures by feds last year
The Department of Justice Assets Forfeiture Fund collected over $15 billion in the fiscal year ending September 30, 2017. It was reported Thursday in the government link below, third paragraph:
The largest amounts were in cases in which the Justice Department recovered money lost in fraud and other misconduct cases. It also included fines imposed by law. This money was paid by people, individuals, and corporations who were found violating federal health, safety, civil rights or environmental laws.
This money is paid into the General Fund of the U.S. Treasury. It can be used to pay for any purpose. Why not use this money to help pay for the border wall between the U.S. and Mexico?
Some of the court approved seized assets are paid as restitution to victims and their states' victim compensation programs.
The Justice Department reported $23 billion was collected in seized assets in 2015.
