Imran Awan and wife, Hina Alvi, to accept plea deal on July 3rd

In an order signed yesterday by Judge Tanya Chutkan, the Awans agreed to enter a plea deal on July 3rd. (Case 1:17-cr-00161-TSC Document 52-1).

ORIGINAL STORY (Yesterday)

The criminal trial of Imran Awan and his wife, Hina Alvi (pictured above), starts Thursday at 10 a.m. in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. 

Awan's wife and three children have left the country "with no intentions of returning", said FBI agent Brandon C. Merriman.

Both husband and wife were federal workers with top secret clearance to Congress' computer systems since 2004.

They have been charged with:

  • conspiracy
  • bank fraud
  • false statement on loan and credit application
  • unlawful monetary transactions
  • aiding and abetting and causing an act to be done

Awan and his wife are accused of illegally wiring $283,000 to Pakistan and defrauding Wright Patman Congressional Federal Credit Union of $165,000.

On May 3, prosecutors said they were trying to work out a plea deal.  

Awan "does not have a pot to piss in,” said his attorney, Chris Gowen.

Awan worked in Congress for Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (Rep-FL) from 2004 to 2017. He also worked for the Democratic National Committee (DNC) when Wasserman-Schultz was its head in 2016.
