N. Korea is "distraction" from China, India warring over Bhutan water rights

"North Korea is a distraction" from China and India warring over water rights at the Bhutan border, according to Steve Pieczenik. He returned recently from N. Korea.

Bhutan is a landlocked country located in the East Himalayan Mountains of Central Asia. It is bound by the Tibetan region of China to the north as well as India to the south, east and west. Bhutan is mostly mountains.

Pieczenik was Deputy Assistant Secretary of State to Henry Kissinger, Cyrus Vance, and James Baker. Pieczenik served in this capacity to Presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and George H. Bush.

Don Gregg, 89, is America's best expert on N. Korea, according to Time Magazine's Editor-in-Chief, Norman Pearlstine. According to Gregg, Pieczenik is America's second best expert on N. Korea.

In his interview with Time, Gregg said, "“The North Koreans aren’t suicidal. They don’t want a war". Despite the rhetoric and the propaganda, Gregg said North Korea’s leaders are “thoughtful, well-educated pragmatists.”

Gregg worked for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) for 31 years and was former U.S. Ambassador to Korea. While at the CIA, Gregg was Steve Pieczenik's boss.
