Obama "soon understood the chain of command and who had influence in individual parishes", said Gregory Galluzzo, his mentor. Galluzzo is a former Jesuit priest who has retired.
"It was not politically advantageous to be in a Catholic church” if one was a black person and interested in politics said Galluzzo.
“That’s the way (Mayor Richard) Daley worked,” Galluzzo said. “He was in some ways a great community organizer. His hands were not on any one thing. His hands were on everything.”
