President Barack Obama was hired by the Catholic Church in Chicago as a community organizer in 1985. It was for their Developing Communities Project. He was paid $10,000 a year.

Obama "soon understood the chain of command and who had influence in individual parishes", said Gregory Galluzzo, his mentor. Galluzzo is a former Jesuit priest who has retired.

"It was not politically advantageous to be in a Catholic church” if one was a black person and interested in politics said Galluzzo.

“That’s the way (Mayor Richard) Daley worked,” Galluzzo said. “He was in some ways a great community organizer. His hands were not on any one thing. His hands were on everything.”

The Gamaliel Foundation was founded in Chicago in 1968 to assist the Contract Buyers League, which worked to assist African-American home buyers in the city's West Side.
