More women than men will get and die from anal cancer this year, according to the American Cancer Society.

They predict that the majority of the 1,100 deaths, 650, will be women or 59 per cent. Also, of the 8,200 new cases, most of them will be women, 5,200, or 63.4%.

In the opinion of the American Cancer Society, this is a major public health concern.

To date, other than the American Cancer Society, no one has noted this disparity. Nor has the medical community published any studies to explain why women rather than men are affected by anal cancer in greater numbers.

The American Cancer Society also said that new cases of anal cancer have been rising for many years. They also note that most of the cases are in people with average ages in their early 60's.

The risk of being diagnosed with anal cancer is one in 500 or less than one per cent, said the American Cancer Society. It has provided no explanation for its opinion on why it considers anal cancer to be an epidemic.
